our adoptable animals

Our rescue animals come from many different circumstances.  We focus primarily on local dogs, cats, and some exotics that are without a home or that need to be rehomed due to extenuating circumstances. Some are from our Outreach Program, some are transferred from other local rescues and shelters, and some are owner surrenders. The reasons are many, but the common factor is they need our help. When you adopt your pet from GEARS, you help an animal in need.

how to Adopt an animal from gears

If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, we ask that you submit an adoption application, even if you’re not sure exactly which animal you’d like.  Our Adoptions Director will review the application and assign it to an Adoptions Coordinator.  We will contact your references, and if we believe we have a possible match we would then schedule the meet and greet.

The meet and greet is typically at your home, so the animal can meet all members of your family (pets included!) and we can complete a home visit at the same time.  We can also do a virtual meet and greet if the parties are more comfortable.  We recommend a 24 hour waiting period after the meet so you can be sure you are ready for your new family member. A trial adoption may take place to ensure a good fit for everyone.  If both parties are confident in the match, we then arrange a time to finalize the adoption!

This entire procedure should be completed in a week, but varies according to schedules.

We also hold adoption events where a number of our animals will be present and interested families can come meet and socialize. Volunteers are on hand to answer questions about the animals and our procedures.

Animals Adopted Through GEARS

What is included with my adopted animal?

All of our adoptable animals are raised in loving foster homes with force free training. Vet check, tattoo or microchip, vaccinations, deworming, and spay/neuter are all included for cats and dogs.  We also have a Happily Ever Afters page on Facebook so adoptive families can connect with each other, ask for tips, and share photos and stories.  We offer ongoing support and can recommend boarding kennels, trainers, food choices, etc for as long as you need!

The Adoption Process

1. Fill out the application for the animal you are interested in.

2. The adoptions team will be in touch within 4 days letting you know the status of your application.

3. If you are a good potential match for the animals, the adoptions team checks your references.

4. After the references are complete, you and the foster home will schedule a meet and greet with the foster parent and animal.

5. After the meet and greet, if everyone is in agreement that it could be a good match, a 1 week trial adoption is arranged.

6. If the 1 week trial adoption is a success, we finalize the adoption and send over the animal’s medical records.
