our adoptable animals

Our rescue animals come from many different circumstances.  We focus on local dogs and cats. Some are from outreach programs, some are transferred from other local rescues and shelters, some are owner surrenders and some cats come directly to our cat shelter. The reasons are many, but the common factor is they need our help. When you adopt your pet from GEARS, you help an animal in need.

If you have current pets in your home, they must be up to date on vaccinations and be spayed or neutered.

how to Adopt an animal from gears

If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, we ask that you submit an adoption application, even if you’re not sure exactly which animal you’d like. Our Adoptions Director will review the application. If it looks like a good potential fit, it gets sent to the foster home to review. If they think you sound like a good match, we proceed to confirming your interest in the animal, contacting your references, and once completed, you and the foster home will schedule the meet and greet.

The meet and greet is typically at your home, so the animal can meet all members of your family (pets included!) and we can complete a home visit at the same time. We ask for a 24 hour waiting period after the meet so you can be sure you are ready for your new family member. If both parties want to proceed, a one (1) week trial adoption will take place to ensure a good fit for everyone. It’s important that you understand that your new animal will need time to decompress and to allow their true personality to come out! If both parties are confident in the match, we then finalize the adoption!

The process from the time you submit your application to when the meet and greet happens should take about a week, but this can vary according to schedules. Don’t forget that we ALL are volunteers (including our foster homes) and have other commitments.

We also hold adoption events where a number of our animals will be present and interested families can come meet and socialize. Volunteers are on hand to answer questions about the animals and our processes.

Animals Adopted Through GEARS

What is included with my adopted animal?

All of our adoptable animals are raised in loving foster homes with force free training. Vet check, tattoo or microchip, vaccinations, deworming, and spay/neuter are all included for cats and dogs. We also have a Happily Ever Afters page on Facebook so adoptive families can connect with each other, ask for tips, and share photos and stories. We offer ongoing support and can recommend force-free certified boarding kennels and trainers, food choices, etc. for as long as you need!

The Adoption Process

1. Fill out the application for the animal you are interested in.

2. The adoptions team will be in touch within 5 days letting you know the status of your application.

3. If you are a good potential match for the animal, the adoptions team checks your references.

4. After the references are complete, you and the foster home will schedule a meet and greet to be done at your home. All home residents (including the furry kind!) must be in attendance.

5. After the meet and greet, and after the 24 hour waiting period, if everyone is in agreement that it could be a good match, a 1 week trial adoption is arranged. You will be sent a trial adoption contract to complete and return before the trial adoption begins.

6. If the 1 week trial adoption is a success, we finalize the adoption by having you complete the adoption contract and e-transfer the adoption fee (we do not accept credit cards for adoption fees). We then send over the animal’s medical records. And the fur baby is yours forever! 🥰
