GEARS is not a shelter and uses foster homes that provide loving temporary homes with proper care, socialization and training for all of our adoptable dogs and cats.
GEARS is non-profit, charitable organization (822791430RR0001) that is run by a passionate community of volunteers and foster homes.
The Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society acknowledges that our work takes place on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional and ancestral territory of the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux and Nakota Sioux. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
GEARS supports local businesses whenever we can and our programming benefits members within the communities we serve. Our focus is on Edmonton and surrounding areas, and we are fortunate to have many partners throughout Alberta.
100% of proceeds from our store go towards our rescue animals. Some of our foster dogs and cats have expensive medical needs. Visit our Sponsor section to help us provide for their care!
There are many ways you can support GEARS and our mission to provide all animals with loving forever homes, even if you are unable or not ready to adopt.
Share your special skills or training! We are always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team. Areas include event planning, fundraising, marketing, graphic design, medical and more.
Have a unique skill or great fundraising idea? We’d love to hear about it! We are always looking for new ways to support our rescue missions.
Give a rescue a loving home while they wait for adoption. We need both temporary and long-term care fosters. GEARS intakes both cats and dogs in varying conditions and ages. We always ensure fosters are paired with the right animal for their situation and capabilities.
We also cover all needed supplies, food and veterinary costs! If you are unable to afford or commit to an adoption, fostering is a great option.
Our rescue animals rely on continued support from our community. Help us rescue more animals by sponsoring a rescue with special medical needs, or purchasing vaccinations.

We are a not-for-profit society incorporated under the Government of Alberta and a registered charity with the Government of Canada. We can issue tax receipts for donations equal or greater than $20. Our organization relies on community support to continue and increase our intakes of stray, injured or abandoned animals. Every donation helps!

Your beloved cat scratching furniture and other belongings can be a pain. Does it feel like your tiny kitty has tiger-sized claws? Is your couch looking frayed and tattered from their constant attention? Furniture scratching can be a frustrating behaviour.
An eventful outreach trip On a frigid winter day, GEARS outreach volunteer, Courtney, heard a faint cry. She discovered a puppy buried underneath the straw in a doghouse, stiff as a board and unresponsive. Fearing the worst, she quickly wrapped
“No! Stop it! Sit!” you frantically exclaim while your adorable monster of a puppy nips playfully at your ankles and toes. Your puppy won’t stop biting. You’ve tried everything to get through to them with no success, so what now?
